1 day: Cluj Napoca
Arrival at the airport of the beautiful city of Cluj Napoca, in the north of Transylvania, and meeting with
the Italian speaking guide available for the duration of the trip. During the tour we will admire the exceptional Art Nouveau, Renaissance and Baroque palaces, as well as the Gothic church of San Michele which saw the change of different religious denominations and which remains one of the most beautiful and largest in Romania. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
2nd day: Cluj Napoca - Sighetu Marmatiei (villages Breb and Sarbi) - Sapanta - Vadu Izei
After breakfast, departure for Sighetu Marmatiei, an important town in the rural region of
Maramures. On the way we will stop at the Breb Village, a traditional Romanian place, and
then the Village of Sarbi, on the banks of the Cosau river, where we will admire the
wooden portals , (the larger the portal, the richer the family that built it ). These villages
are famous for their particular houses, entirely wooden, for buildings beautifully
decorated with carvings and created using many different types of wood. We will therefore make a spectacular
dive into the rural world, observing mills, distilleries and oil mills, we will breathe clean air, we will taste
genuine food, and we will learn about the most ancient Romanian traditions. After lunch we will head towards
Sapanta, to visit the famous Allegro Cemetery, so named for the colorful crosses
found inside and for the portraits and popular poems dedicated to the dead and present on the crosses. Later we will visit the highest church in Maramures, with a bell tower of almost 80 meters, Sapanta Peri, and return to Sighetu Marmatiei stopping at Vadu Izei. Traditional dinner and overnight stay in Vadu Izei in a typical farmhouse in the northern region.
3rd day: Vadu Izei - Barsana - Ieud - Bogdan Voda - Vadu Izei
After breakfast we leave Vadu Izei to discover together and visit other wooden churches of the
Maramures, famous Unesco monuments, wonderful, created entirely in wood, without
even a piece of metal, made with the technique of casing. We will take you to the
wonderful ecclesiastical complex of Barsana, recent, but still wooden, then we will go to see the oldest wooden church in the region, the Church of Ieud, from the XIV century, which was never burned by the Tartars because it was isolated. Later we will visit the Church of San Nicola, in the Village Bogdan Voda, a name that recalls the founder of the Principality of Moldavia, which in fact came from the Maramures. These places of worship preserve inside them extraordinary naive frescoes, made with vegetable colors and unique and very particular iconographies. After lunch we will visit traditional laboratories, where rugs or typical clothes of the Romanian rural world are created, the famous natural wood washing machine, called „valtoarea“. Dinner and overnight at Vadu Izei.
4th day: Vadu Izei - Viseu de Sus
After breakfast we set off on a steam train ride and it will be like taking a trip back in time along the same path that the woodsmen used to do, to transport the timber, skirting the river and admiring a beautiful valley and breathtaking peaks. We will have lunch in the open air and continue the journey by train, at the end return, dinner and overnight stay in a farmhouse in Viseu de Sus
5th day: Viseu de Sus - Bistrita - Monasteries of Bucovina
Breakfast and departure for the beautiful mountain region of Bucovina to visit the beautiful monasteries frescoed both internally and externally and classified as UNESCO monuments. The places of worship that we will see are three among which the Moldovita monastery which is famous for having been founded by Petru Rares and because it preserves an extraordinary Madonna of Tenderness made in Renaissance style where the mother with her son is exalted, and not so much the Virgin Mary with the son
of God as in classical iconography. We will also visit the beautiful monastery Humor, famous for its warm red-brown tone. Dinner and overnight stay in a Bucovina farmhouse
6th day: Monasteries of Bucovina -
Breakfast and day dedicated to the visit to UNESCO monuments. We will visit the Voronet monastery, famous for being linked to the name of Stephen the Great, who founded it, and is the oldest of the
monasteries we will admire. Voronet's blue is unique, a particular shade, made with
lapis lazuli powder. This monastery houses an extraordinary Universal Judgment. We will
also visit the most recent Sucevita monastery and the wonderful painting of the Scala Delle
Virtue makes it a true artistic jewel. We will also visit the Sucevita monastery and go to Marginea, to admire the black ceramic workshop and to buy some typical products. We will also visit, inside, a typical Bucovina house, still in the town famous for its black pottery. We will continue towards Suceava, to visit the Orthodox monastery of Dragomirna, which has no external frescoes, but it is still very beautiful and interesting from an architectural point of view.
Dinner and overnight at a hotel in the area.
Day 7: Voronet - Agapia - Bicaz - Piatra Neamt
Breakfast In the morning and departure for Moldova, we therefore move further south to visit the ancient
Neamt monastery, always linked to the name of the famous prince and leader of the Principality of Moldavia, Stefano Il Grande, who was a great religious and cultural man. Later we will go to Agapia, to visit one of the most numerous communities of Orthodox nuns, 300 and the local living museum. After lunch we will visit the Bicaz Gorges and the Red Lake. Here we will spend beautiful moments immersed in nature and doing simple but quality shopping. Lake Rosso is a natural barrier lake and together with the Bicaz Gorges it forms a large natural park, a protected reserve on the border between Moldavia and Transylvania. Next, we will head to Piatra Neamt to have dinner and spend the night in a hotel in the city.
